Program History | Calhoun Football

The first football team was organized in 1922. The first head coach was Wayne Craddock of Palestine, Texas.

Local members of the first team included Woody Regan, Bill Bauer, and Dick Thayer.

Hal North was the second head coach in school history.

The 1922 team and Coach Craddock decided on the Sandcrab as a mascot because they wanted something pertaining to the coast. Sharks and Stingrays were already taken by other teams. The fiddler crab was considered, but only had one claw. The Sandcrab had two claws, and was viewed as quick, darting, and hard to catch.

The Sandcrab team of 1960, coached by Bobby Goff, made it to the state finals, the only time in school history. The Sandcrabs lost the 3A state title to Brownwood, 26-6.

In recent history, Richard Whitaker took over as head coach in 2005 after a long period of difficulty in the program.

Current coach, Stephen Hrncir, became the head coach in 2025.
